Sunshine Coast

The weather so far has been good and it is still fine today despite the forecast saying light rain today getting heavier tomorrow. I have been visiting the beaches and am amazed at the number of people around for this time of year making it very hard to find a parking spot. I feel sorry for anyone coming here over the summer school holiday period.

Caloundra & Camping

I am now camping at the Dicky Beach Holiday Park in Caloundra after flying from Cairns to Brisbane yesterday. I will be here for a week and have rented a car to get about. Last night I stayed in the Paradise Palms Motel at Marcoola Beach as my flight did not arrive in Brisbane until around 6 pm and then I had to pick up the rental car and drive to the Sunshine Coast (100 klms). The Dicky Beach Holiday Park is quite large and right on the beachfront but the camp kitchen is ordinary with no fridge and no microwave.

I do not have any real plans other than checking out the beaches (Kings Beach, Mooloolaba Beach and Noosa Beach mainly). I have been surprised by how many people there are here considering it is mid week and not even summer yet. The photo below is of Kings Beach taken at 9.30 am this morning (Wednesday).

Today I visited Rusty's Markets for the first time and was pleasantly surprised - they have a wide range of fruit and vegetables and at much better prices than the major supermarkets. Later I went to the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon which will be my local beach now that I am living in town.

Summer is Here

After a few quite cold months (including single digit lows) the weather has warmed up dramatically over the past two weeks - we are now having temperatures in the high twenties on a daily basis and I have been back in the sea and the pool (I don't like winter).

I have not been doing any travelling other than the occasional trip to Cairns and I do not have anything planned until late November when I am going to the Sunshine Coast for week.

I may be moving back to live in Cairns sometime in the next few months as I need to have an operation.

The Usual

I have just got home from another “Usual” circuit trip via Cairn’s. I rode up to Cairns yesterday and stayed overnight at the Sunland Leisure Park again (this time I was upgraded to a Family Studio Cabin – similar to the Poolside Cabins with a slightly different layout).

I had a couple of things to do in Cairns and had planned to come back via the coast highway today – but the weather was fine this morning so I rode up to Mareeba for breakfast then on to Atherton and Millaa Millaa for lunch and then home to Wongaling Beach.

Mountain Circuit

Back home after another Mountain Circuit trip. Today I went from Fishery Falls to Gordonvale and up the Gillies Range (this road has 263 corners and rises 2,624 feet (800 metres) over just 19 kilometres) and on to Atherton where I had breakfast. I then came down the mountains via Millaa Millaa and stopped in Innisfail for a rest stop. I think I will give the mountains a miss for a while as it is getting too cold.

Fishery Falls

I am now at Fishery Falls staying at the Fishery Falls Holiday Park Resort. I am in one of their Single Rooms which is very basic – a single bed, wardrobe, small TV (about 12″) and a bar fridge. The cost for the night was $38 which is the same as I paid at Cairns Sunland Leisure Park where the room was at least four times the size with a double bed, large fridge, cooktop, microwave and cooking utensils/crockery etc. and also a large LCD TV with cable channels.
Considering that this basic room costs only $10 more than an unpowered camp site it is probably good value for a single person.

One thing I do not like about this park is that they falsely advertise themselves as a “Cairns Holiday Park” when in fact they are nowhere near Cairns at all – it is actually 40 kilometres south of Cairns.

Back Home

I am now back home at Wongaling Beach after my two day mini trip. Everything went to plan and it was a good trip. I rode up to Cairns on Friday and stayed at the Sunland Leisure Park (see previous post) which was very good and I will be staying there again.

I left Cairns on Saturday morning and rode up the Kuranda Range and on to Mareeba where I had breakfast (Subway) and a Skybury Coffee. I then rode to Atherton and the day became overcast and got quite cold (felt like snow to me) I did not stop at Atherton and headed down the mountains to Millaa Millaa. On the way to Millaa Millaa I stopped at Malanda just to try and warm up a bit.

Had lunch at Millaa Millaa (my usual, a coffee and home made potato top pie) and then rode down the mountains to Innisfail only to find that it was almost as cold on the coast as it had been up the mountains. I had a short break at Innisfail before riding home to Wongaling Beach – Travelled around 400 kilometres over the two days.

A good trip (although a little chilly) and I will be doing something similar again next week (with warmer clothing). I plan to stay at  Fishery Falls which is about 100 kilometres north of here and then ride to Gordonvale and up the Gillies Range to Yungaburra and Atherton before coming back down the mountains to home.

Cairns Sunland Leisure Park

I am now at Cairns Sunland Leisure Park in my “Budget Villa” and it is very good. The park is quite large and well laid out – it is just off a major Cairns road but is quiet. Whilst I have only been here an hour or so I am already impressed – the budget villa has a king size bed, air conditioner, fan, sofa, wardrobe, large fridge, double hotplate, jug, cutlery etc., microwave and a large LCD TV with satellite channels. Outside is a parking area and a table and a couple of chairs. The facilities are just across the road and are clean.

The Sunland Leisure Park has obviously been here for a long time but does not look “Run Down” as do some similar places I have stayed at.
I think this may well be the best value budget accommodation in Cairns.
